New HPH Hospital in Korea declares it's strong commitment to Health Promotion!

The continued success and growth of HPH in Asia seems to only become more overwhelming by the day. The latest news from the region include two new members from Korea and 12 hospitals from Thailand. Common for most of the new Asian members is that they have been working with HP for a long time, and already have very impressive results to show. One of the especially remarkable examples of this is the great HP work and recent HPH decleration ceremony at the Andong Medical Center (AMC) in Korea.

The Andong Medical Center operates 17 departments and 266 beds, and it serves a population of 170,000 people. It is located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, which is a southeastern province of South Korea. On September 28, 2009, the Andong Medical Center, which had been working with HP for some time already, went ahead and publicly declared it's commitment to becoming a Health Promoting Hospital and to actively work towards promoting the health of the population it serves. The declaration ceremony was attended by more than 150 people, including the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, Kim Kwan-yong; Andong City's Mayor, Kim Hwi-dong; Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council member, Jeong Gyeong-gu; heads of other municipalities, personnel form the community organizations, AMC’s staff, patients, residents and many more.

You can read the full press release and see the pictures from the declaration ceremony here!

Aside from the recent declaration itself, there is much else to be impressed by at the AMC. Among many other efforts, the AMC have conducted a major survey of the needs and situations of AMC’s patients and staff, as well as the AMC’s health environment, which resulted in the development and implementation of a large-scale HP program to address identified problems. Also, the AMC has secured a strong basis of support for the HP efforts from the Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and from Andong City, it has become a Smoke-free Hospital, it has a Home Visiting Nurse Services program, it has a Housewife College program as well as a One-stop Service Support for Female Violence Victims program.

At the International HPH Secretariat we want to congratulate the Andong Medical Centre on their great work and the recent declaration and HPH Membership. Welcome to the International HPH Network, and we very much look forward to our future collaboration!
