Purpose and goals of the HPH Network

In 1993 the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated the Network of Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Services (HPH) with the aim to reorient health care institutions by integrating health promotion and education, disease prevention and rehabilitation services in curative care.

Year today the International HPH Network includes more than 650 member hospitals and health services and 32 National / Regional Networks from over 30 states. To see the HPH world map click here. In 2005 the International HPH Secretariat was established and placed at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Evidence-Based Health Promotion in Hospitals in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The activities and products in the HPH Network are aimed patients, the staff, the community, and the hospital/health service as an organization.

A health promoting hospital/health service aims to incorporate the concepts, values, strategies, and standards of health promotion into the organizational structure and culture of the hospital. The goal is to improve the quality of health care, the relationship between the hospital and the community, and the conditions for and satisfaction of patients, staff and relatives. The metod is to apply the principles of the 1986 Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and to develop the hospital in the ways expressed in the  Vienna recommendations on health promoting hospitals from 1997.

The goals of the HPH Network are:

  • To integrate health promotion into the culture of the hospitals;
  • To broaden the focus of hospital management and structures to include health care, not just curative care;
  • To develop documented and evaluated examples of good practice for the use of other institutions;
  • To facilitate and encourage cooperation and the exchange of experience between the hospitals of a region or country, including the identification of areas of common interest, the sharing of resources and the development of common evaluation systems.

The HPH Network organisation consists of:

  • At operational level: Networks, Task Forces, Working Groups and Individual Member Hospitals
  • At governance level: Governance Board, General Assembly and the International HPH Secretariat.

WHO, WHO CC Copenhagen and WHO CC Vienna are permanently represented in the Governance Board, which furthermore includes 7 Network Coordinators elected by the General Assembly.

The General Assembly consists of all Network Coordinators, Task Force Leaders and WHO representatives. They meet annually prior to the International HPH Conference.
